LEARNING OUTCOME 3

I used learning outcome 3 throughout the semester and it was very beneficial to my learning. Learning outcome 3 is about reading actively and critically and this is displayed below in the images of my annotations for “The End of Food.” Marking up the text allows for improved reading comprehension as well as preparation to include it in your own writing. When annotating, I underline, use marginal comments, and use stars. For this piece, I have blue stars on particular sections that I may want to use in one of my papers. So first, I underline key pieces or parts of the paper that stand out to me that I may need later on. The most useful thing I do when annotating though is make the marginal comments. These marginal comments can include a variety of different things. They can be really short summaries/the main idea of a paragraph, they can be a question, or they can be my feelings/opinion on what is written. I practically dissect the paper so that when I go back to it, I can use my annotations, rather than rereading the entire piece. The more you do the first time around, the more you get out of the paper. When deciding what to mark up or discuss, I usually choose things I disagree with because it gives me a lot to talk about and weigh in on. On the other hand, I also markup pieces I agree and connect with, because it is important to show both sides to make your writing stronger.  I also include the facts and key points of the paper, which is really important for later on. This shows that I connect and draw relationships from the pieces I read. It is important to think about and question what you’re reading as well so you can get a deeper meaning out of it. I clearly displayed this in my annotations. I challenged what the author said as well as extended on their ideas, giving me a lot to discuss in the paper I would later write. The more you engage with their work, the more you will learn. These annotations are later used to write a paper as well as journals. Journal 4, which is shown below, was about passages that I could potentially use in my essay. My annotations made this much easier and much more efficient. With my annotations and ability to apply them, it is obvious I used learning outcome 3 to the best of my ability.

Below are 5 annotated pages from “The End of Food” by Lizzie Widdicombe:

Below is a journal that goes along with this learning outcome:

JOURNAL FOUR:

A passage I could potentially use in my essay is on page one, and is in the second paragraph. In this paragraph, Rhinehart saw food as a burden, using too much time and as it being a hassle. In the grand scheme of things he just doesn’t understand the love for food, which was clearly displayed in my favorite meal essay. I believe this could be of potential use for my paper because I could show an opposing idea and people could see two perspectives.

Another passage that could benefit my essay is found on page six, paragraph two. It is about how Rhinehart isn’t a fan of farms and how he doesn’t see them as necessary for the environment. This could fit well into my paper because my food comes from a farm and I strongly disagree. This also would be a good way to incorporate two perspectives.

Lastly another useful passage could be paragraph two on page seven. Rhinehart goes on to explain his perspective on life and how he doesn’t see the value of materials of life. In my essay, I could contradict this because I think food, a material item, brings people together. He doesn’t value as many things as most people would so I think this would be interesting to include. I cannot agree with “”Things are worthless.”” I think that a good chunk of time has passed since 2012 when things began for him, where things may be more valuable now. He has good ideas but it is hard for me to agree with some of them.
